Administrative and event records

This subseries consists of records related to administrative, operational, and financial functions at at the School of Psychiatric Nursing as well as records from its events and graduations. The subseries also includes some records from New Westminster Public Hospital for the Insane, with unclear chain of custody.

Record types include manuals, reports, policies and procedures, histories, study notes, staff lists, programs, minutes, pay slips, constitutions, and bylaws.

Administrative records

This subseries consists of records related to the administration and operation of Riverview Hospital that were made and received by the Hospital. Records include employee handbooks, regulations, procedures, codes, manuals; program materials; telephone and physician directories; annual reports; financial information; blank hospital forms; a certificate of incorporation; and the Riverview Tree Inventory.

Art Talbot collected materials

Art Talbot was the head carpenter building West Lawn and the Chief of the Essondale Fire Brigade B Company. The file contains two scanned genealogical records created by Art Talbot's son, Ron Talbot and 1 photograph of Art Talbot in front of West Lawn.

Assorted photographs of Colony Farm (Glass Negatives)

The subseries consists of photographs thought to have been taken by W.J.Moore although it is possible they were taken by another photographer. The assumption of provenance has been assumed based on the context in which the negatives were found. It has not been possible to confirm. The photographs depict the buildings, livestock, farm workers (likely Essondale patients), and employees of Colony Farm and Essondale (Riverview Hospital). The subjects consist primarily of cows and horses, as Colony Farm was known across the province for the quality of its livestock. It was awarded a master breeder shield in 1930 from the British Columbia Branch of Holstein Canada. Many of the agricultural photographs also show Essondale's West Lawn building at various points in its construction.

Assorted photographs of Riverview Hospital

This subseries consists primarily of photographs that depict aspects of social and administrative life at Riverview Hospital and the nursing school. These photographs include staff and volunteer portraits, identification photographs, retirement and goodbye teas, awards dinners, luncheons, grand openings, seminars, lectures, courses, staff trips, holiday events, displays, and graduations from the School of Psychiatric Nursing. Additionally, this subseries contains photographs depicting the interiors and exteriors of buildings on Riverview Hospital grounds, the Woodlands School (TWS), as well as various public works projects, vehicles, and medical supplies used by the hospital staff.

Record types consists largely of silver gelatin negatives in large format cellulose acetate sheets and cellulose acetate film strips. The subseries also contains chromogenic colour negative film strips and large format sheets, silver gelatin DOP prints, a photograph album, and a scrapbook.

Aubrey and Vivian Elliott collected materials

Aubrey Charles Elliott and Vivian Elliott (née Marc) were staff at Riverview Hospital. The file consists of photographs of Vivian in her nursing position and Aubrey in his grounds staff position and at special events. The file also contains photographs of buildings on Riverview Grounds and some biographical information about the Elliotts.

Buildings, Public Works, and Vehicles

This file consists of photographs that depict the buildings, equipment, and grounds of Riverview Hospital, as well as some projects made by individuals in its Industrial Therapy program. The file includes panorama and aerial photographs of Riverview Hospital, as well as photographs of construction and maintenance projects undertaken by the hospital's Public Works Department, such as hospital renovations, excavations, appliance repair, and fire damage. The file also includes repairs on vehicles maintained by the Transport Department. Additionally, this file has photographs of equipment and technology used by hospital workers, including photographs of the audiovisual department, electricians' sub stations, and notably Central Supply Room trays and supply trays for electro-convulsive therapy.

The Industrial Therapy program was originally implemented in 1963 with a focus on developing basic skills that would enable patients to return to a community after hospitalization. These included working on cabinetry, upholstery, metalwork, electronics, etc.

Canadian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing journals

This subseries consists of an incomplete run of volumes of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing (formerly the Psych Nurse and The Psychiatric Nurse) collected by the School of Psychiatric Nursing.

The first edition of the journal (1951) was a joint project sponsored by the newly created Council of British Columbia Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Saskatchewan Psychiatric Nurses Association. The first edition was published by Godfrey Haliburton, editor of the Burquitlam Star. The next several issues were jointly sponsored projects and were not in a continuous cycle of production. This subseries includes the first issue in 1951, and the first quarterly issue from 1952.

In the 1960s the journal changed ownership and was published by The Psychiatric Nurses' Association of Canada. They abbreviated its name to The Psych Nurse, and in June 1966 changed the name of the journal to The Canadian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing. The subseries contains v.2, no. 2 (1962); v.4, no. 1 (1965); v.7, no. 1,3-7, 9 (1966); v.8, no. 2-3, 5-10 (1967); v.9, no. 1-10 (1968); and v.10, no. 1-5, 7-10 (1969).

Throughout its history the journal features articles from nurses at Riverview Hospital.

Colony Farm Records

This series consists of records related to the construction and operations on Colony Farm at Riverview Hospital. The materials relate to the original construction planning and dyking done to create Colony Farm, as well as some of the early auction and sale records of cattle and horses.

Record types include correspondence, financial records, agreements, receipts, a certificate, and policy material.

Coquitlam 100 Years collection

The collection consists of approx. 640 photographic prints used for the "Coquitlam 100 Years: Reflections of the Past" publication produced by the District of Coquitlam in 1991. The collection also includes the transcripts of interviews used in the publication as well as the administrative files of the Pioneer Tales of Coquitlam Committee and various publications and pamphlets used for contextual information for the book.
