Institutionele geschiedenis

The Burquitlam Lions Club was established in 1960. The Club was a part of Multiple District 19, Zone H-5 of Lions Clubs International. Like all Lions Clubs worldwide, the mission of the Burquitlam Lions Club was to create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.

Every individual Lions Club establishes its own service priorities in addition to programs supported and recognized by Lions International (typically programs focusing on Sight, Hearing, Diabetes Awareness, Youth Outreach and International Understanding). But Burquitlam Lions Club also supported local initiatives, notably organizing and collecting Christmas hampers for the needy, conducting social programs for the elderly, providing music bursaries (Mary Olfield), organizing Easter egg hunts and serving food at community events, and helping local families in need with projects such as wheelchairs, ramps, lifts, educational tools, and equipment. Additionally, at the Multiple District level, they aided in supporting Camp Squamish and Camp Horizon for disabled individuals.

The Burquitlam Lions Club was also responsible for funding two care centres: the Burquitlam Lions Intermediate Care Centre (1981-2016) and L.J. Christmas Manor Seniors Home.

During its existence, the Burquitlam Lions Club met the first and third Wednesday of every month at the L.J. Christmas Manor. However, due to decreasing membership numbers, the Club dissolved on July 1, 2018.

Geschiedenis beheer

The records were gathered by James Kennedy in his capacity as President of the Burquitlam Lions Club and donated to the Archives once the club dissolved on July 1, 2018.

Bereik en inhoud

The fonds consists of the administrative and operational records created and received by the Burquitlam Lions Club from 1969 to 2016. The materials are related to the club’s initiatives serving both the local community as well as international programs through Lions International.

The fonds reflects this in the following three series: Administrative and membership records; Newsletters and bulletins, and Events and programs.

The Administration and membership records series consists of records pertaining to the Burquitlam Lions Club's administrative and membership activities. It is divided into four subseries: Membership records, Constitution, policy and procedures; Agendas and minutes; and Correspondence.

The Newsletters and bulletins series consists of newsletters and bulletins created by the Burquitlam Lions Club, and ones received by Lions Club International and District 19 Governors.

The Events and programs series contains records related to specific programs supported by the Burquitlam Lions Club as well as events held in their community.

Ordening

The original order of the administrative and membership records has largely been maintained, where many files were arranged with a file structure. The remainder of the Burquitlam Lions Club records have been physically re-arranged by the archivist to correspond with the intellectual order outlined in the finding aid. The archivist attempted to aggregate materials for particular programs whenever possible and keep original folder titles.
