Administrative history
Black Press was founded in 1975 when David Black purchased the Williams Lake Tribune. In 1997, Black Press purchased 16 newspapers in the Lower Mainland, including the Maple Ridge News, which had been founded by Gordy Robson in the late 1980s. Its lower mainland portfolio eventually included the Burnaby New West News and the Sunday News, which became the Tri-City News when it began to be published twice a week. The Tri-City News was sold to Glacier Media Group in 2015.
Custodial history
The photographs were taken by photographers for various Black Press editions (Tri-Cities, Burnaby/New Westminster, Maple Ridge) as part of their employment contract with the company. A centralized dark room and processing facility was set up to manage and store the photographs for all the editions in the area. The photographs were stored at the Tri-City News offices in Port Coquitlam until the point of transfer.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of photographs taken for the various Black Press publications in the Lower Mainland, including the Tri-City News. It also includes microfilm reels containing copies of the newspaper from 1985-1986 as well as several special editions in print form. The collection also includes bound volumes of the Tri-City News covering the years 1990 until 2000.
